North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) is a Central University established on July 19, 1973 by a law of the Indian Parliament. The university is in the suburb of Shillong, the state capital of Meghalaya, India. The university has two campuses: Shillong and Tura in Meghalaya. The NEHU Tura campus operates under a vice chancellor.

It is the University of the Commission of Grants of the University with Potential of Excellence (conferred in 2006). It was established as a regional university for the northeastern states of India, including Meghalaya, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram, and had given birth to Nagaland University in 1994 and to Mizoram University in 2001. The nationwide university Is ranked in 16 according to India Today AC-Nielsen Best survey of universities in 2012, and in 11 at TOP universities. It also has a world ranking in 1821 by the University Ranking by Academic Performance.

The head of the administration is the vice-rector, appointed by the Visitor of the university, the President of India, for a period of five years. The Governor of Meghalaya is the Principal Rector. Currently Prof. Prabodh Shukla is the Deputy Chancellor, under whom there are two Vice Chancellors, Prof. E.D. Thomas on the campus of Tura and Professor B. Myrboh on the campus of Shillong. Initially, NEHU's academic departments and administration in Shillong operated from three main sites in the city of Shillong; One of the old Maharaja of Mayurbhanj, the other of the Rani of Bijni and the third of the Government of Meghalaya, popularly known as Horse-Shoe Building. The university now runs its central administration from its main campus in Mawkynroh-Umshing.
